About
A Bit of Background
Belitong Geopark is located in Belitung Island, Bangka-Belitung Province, approximately 400 km to the North of Jakarta, or 500 km to the South of Singapore. Belitong Geopark has a total area of approximately 4,800 km2 of land and 13,000 km2 of sea.
Belitung is served by regular commercial flights from Jakarta, Batam, Palembang, Batam and Pangkal Pinang
Geology
Belitong Geopark is made of eight geological formations:
Metasedimentary rocks as part of Kelapakampit Formation that covers about half of Belitung Island.
Sedimentary rocks of the Tajam Formation
The Siantu Formation composed by pillow lava and volcanic breccia is located on the north of the Belitung Island. Tajam Formation and Siantu Formation probably interfingers with the Kelapakampit Formation of a permo carboniferous age.
The Trias Tanjungpandan Granite unit lies on the northwest of Belitung Island. This is a part of the Southeast Asia granite belt spreads from Myanmar along the Malaca Peninsula to Belitung.
The Adamelite Baginda Unit is located in the edge of southern part of Island age of Jurrasic.
The Cretaceous Granodiorite Burungmandi and Batubesi Quartz Diorite lie in Burung Mandi and Kelubi, on the east of Belitung Island.
The Carbonaceous Sand that overlays unconformably Pre-Tertiary rocks, and
The quarter alluvial spreads along the beach of the Belitung Island.
